Final Letter to Baggy Shanker MP

Ignoring This Issue is Unacceptable – Interview Request on Labour’s Plan for Music in Primary Schools

Dear Baggy Shanker MP,

I am writing to you for the third time regarding a crisis in our education system—the erasure of music from primary schools.

So far, my letters have been met with silence. This is not only disappointing; it is unacceptable.

As my elected representative, your role is to listen, engage, and respond to the concerns of your constituents. Ignoring multiple requests to discuss an issue so critical to the future of our children is a failure of duty. Music education is vanishing. Labour says it stands for fairness and opportunity—so where is the action?

A Crisis That Cannot Be Ignored Any Longer

  • 42% of state schools no longer offer music education.

  • Primary schools are reducing music to a forgotten subject—or cutting it entirely.

  • One in five secondary schools in England lacks a dedicated music teacher.

  • Children from lower-income backgrounds are being locked out of creative education.

The silence from policymakers—including yourself—is deafening. If Labour cannot commit to saving music education, then it is complicit in its destruction.

This is the third and final time I am inviting you to join me on my podcast, Inspiring Young Minds, to answer one simple question:

What is Labour’s plan to restore music education in primary schools?

This is your chance to provide clarity on:

Funding: Will Labour commit to ring-fenced funding for music in primary schools? Curriculum Reform: Will music be reinstated as a core subject, rather than a forgotten extra?Teacher Recruitment & Retention: What is Labour’s plan to tackle the growing shortage of specialist music teachers?

Equity in Access: How will Labour ensure that music is not just for the privileged few?

This conversation will be recorded and published publicly to ensure that parents, educators, and voters hear directly from you about Labour’s stance on creative education.

Ignoring this letter—again—will not make this issue disappear. The only thing that will disappear is the next generation’s access to music education if policymakers continue to do nothing.

I will arrange this at your convenience, either in person or via Zoom. But I expect a prompt and serious response.

Do not ignore this letter.

Best regards,
