Frederick II of Prussia.
ย Military genius. Absolute monarch. Relentless expansionist.
ย And, rather inconveniently for the tough-guy image, a serious flautist.
Frederick didnโt dabble.
ย He practised daily.
ย He performed regularly.
ย He even composed over a hundred flute sonatas and concertos.
This is the same man who spent decades at war, reshaped Europe through force, and ran one of the most disciplined armies in history. Yet every evening, without fail, he would sit down and play chamber music.
His teacher?
ย Johann Joachim Quantz. One of the greatest flute makers and composers of the time. Frederick paid him an enormous salary just to stay close. Because when youโre king, you donโt download a tutorial. You hire the best.
Voltaire attended Frederickโs musical evenings and described them as intense, serious affairs. No background music. No polite clapping. This mattered.
The irony is delicious.
ย A ruler obsessed with control, order, and military precision expressing himself through breath, phrasing, and melody.
He ruled by command in the day.
ย He ruled by rhythm at night.
Frederick the Great
ย King
ย General
And a man who knew that even empires need a musical outlet
