Nero. Romeโ€™s most unhinged emperor, part-time tyrant, full-time wannabe rockstar.

Most people know him for the fire of AD 64, the executions, the paranoia, the spectacularly high body countโ€ฆ

ย But fewer people know that Nero had one overwhelming passion:

Music.

Not as a patron.

ย Not as a casual plucker of strings.

ย But as a performer.

ย A man who believed โ€” with breathtaking confidence โ€” that he was the greatest musician Rome had ever produced.

His instrument of choice?

ย The cithara, a kind of Greek lyre.

ย And Nero didnโ€™t just dabble. He practised obsessively, hired the best teachers, and forced every noble in Rome to attend his long, painful recitals.

ย (Critics wereโ€ฆ letโ€™s sayโ€ฆ โ€œdiscouraged.โ€ In the sense that disagreeing with him could shorten your life expectancy.)

Thereโ€™s even a story that during one of his marathon performances, the audience wasnโ€™t allowed to leave โ€” not for illness, not for childbirth, not even for death.

ย Imagine a concert so unbearable youโ€™d rather fake your own funeral to get out of it.

As for the famous โ€œfiddled while Rome burnedโ€:

ย He didnโ€™t play a fiddle โ€” that didnโ€™t exist yet โ€” but he did reportedly sing a dramatic epic about the fall of Troy while the city was in flames.

ย Because nothing says leadership like treating a crisis as an open-mic night.

Nero wanted applause.

ย He got a revolution.

So todayโ€™s hidden musician is historyโ€™s most infamous performer โ€” a man whose passion for music was eclipsed only by his talent for chaos.

Nero:

ย Emperor.

ย Cithara player.

ย Catastrophically committed to his own stage career.

Inspiring young minds through music โ€” helping teachers grow income, confidence, and creativity, one child and one rhythm at a time.
