This is the response from a family member when I announced I aimed to be a millionaire.
So what does it mean?
It wasn’t said in the sense that I do shady deals and sell knocked-off gear. Nor was it meant to be directed in the way that Del Boy’s schemes often ended up in disaster.
No, it was more of a gentle ribbing, a nod to the boldness of my ambition, much like Del Boy’s unshakable belief that “this time next year, we’ll be millionaires.” It was about the audacity to dream big, to take risks, and to believe in a better future—traits that Del Boy embodied in his own unique way.
And it’s true, most people want to experience financial freedom, which is probably why so many people play the lottery every week. And it’s also true that most people won’t get there. The odds are stacked against them, and for many, the dream remains just that—a dream.
But unlike the lottery, achieving financial freedom isn’t down to luck. It’s about making smart choices, working hard, and staying persistent even when the odds seem insurmountable. It’s about learning, growing, and adapting. The destination isn’t as important as the journey—how you get there matters just as much as where you end up.
This brings to mind another figure who’s long been an inspiration to me: Billy Connolly. Raised in the tenements of Glasgow, with the odds stacked completely against him, Billy didn’t just dream of a better life—he went out and made it happen. Through sheer talent, resilience, and a refusal to be defined by his circumstances, he carved out a remarkable career, becoming one of the most beloved comedians and entertainers of our time.
